The beginnings of a new shipping container/ISBU revolution?

Submitted by Andrew Stone on Thursday, 9 October 2008Comments

Through a contact note I received over at my other blogsite I have learned of a new group that has been put in place to build Shipping Container/ISBU homes. They call themselves High Country Green Boxes and are working off of a desire “to bring to life a concept that addresses a very important challenge not only for the local community, but a global population as well.”

This is so exciting. It is exciting to see so much being done with ISBU’s and that they are really beginning to have a strong future. I truly believe that shipping containers are going to become a new revolution in housing across the country.

A little more on DwellBox and in their own words:

High Country Green Boxes has come about as a result of a collective vision developed by a group of serial entrepreneurs with a strong value system rooted in progressive, innovative, and sustainable business practices. Coming together with an impressive resume of experiences and achievements ranging from corporate work in the semiconductor industry, non-profit leadership and management, small business ownership, construction, green design and development, land conservation and real estate finance, this team now intends to bring to life a concept that addresses a very important challenge not only for the local community, but a global population as well.

Hop over to their blog to take a look at a day by day retrospective of their progress as they build their first Shipping container project. Feel their pain and and learn from their trial and error. It is an exciting process to follow and very nice to see more ISBU’s being recycled and put into play out there. I can’t wait to build my own project someday.

    hello.

do any of you know of any efforts at redesigning shipping containers with an eye toward expanding the end use options?

a container designed to be adapted for dwelling?
could save all kinds of labor in transition.

if you have any info. please send.
    thanks.
    nice work on the article.

  • David,

I have not heard of them being designed with an end purpose in mind, but I think that is a great idea. I have suggested in the past that they ship with that purpose in mind. Perhaps a load of construction materials be shipped in a container that will be built into the building the supplies are for.
