Thames and Kosmos – Windpower and the Fuel Cell Car Kit.

Submitted by Andrew Stone on Monday, 13 October 2008Comments

Gosh, it is hard to believe that it has been a year since I blogged on the Thames and Kosmos Powerhouse. It is that wonderful kit that allows you and your children to build a home built on sustainable energy sources. Amazing is what it really is.

Well, yesterday I decided to pop back over to the Thames and Cosmos site and I found two other equally wonderful “toys” for the scientifically minded child in your life. There is the Windpower and the Fuel Cell Car Kit. All three will be must haves for my children.

The Windpower Kit allows you to build a working wind turbine to harness power out of thin air.

First, assemble a wind turbine complete with electric generator, adjustable rotors, and wind speed indicator. Then, conduct more than 20 experiments with your wind turbine, including experiments with different numbers of rotor blades, different blade angles and profiles, different wind speeds, different gear ratios, and so on. Use the wind turbine to generate mechanical power to lift a heavy weight or generate electricity to light up an LED and charge a rechargeable battery.

The Fuel Cell Car Kit allows you to build a model car powered with hydrogen that you make using a solar panel.

First, add water and watch it separate into hydrogen and oxygen. Then, use those stored gases to power your vehicle across the floor. Now that we have your attention, roll up your sleeves and find out more through experiments and demonstrations you can do on your own, in a classroom or with friends.

  • Does anybody have the manual?
Does anybody out there have the experiment manual for the fuel cell/car, and could they advise please what the instructions are on page 92, re invigorating the output from the cell?

My son lost the manual, and I am not sure if disassembly is recommended, or what the process is to renew it.

The bigger manual is not on-line, nor is that info.

Thanks if you can help out.

    Hi,

I've never been to this site and only happened upon it in a search for the best price for some of these kits but I do have this one. :o)

There is a warning on page 92 for disassembly of fuel cell. They say that it "may lead to the destruction of the Nafion foil (the Proton Exchange Membrane). And that would then be your last experiment with the fuel cell!"

To get it going again they say to exchange the distilled water and pull in fresh water with the syringe. Especially if it has not been used for a considerable time.

"Several consecutive charging and discharging procedures will again improve the power capability of the fuel cell. To do this it is best to pull off the wires to the motor and discharge the fuel cell only through the Multimeter (10 A range). "

Hope this helps you out a little. :o)
