Black Friday Mega Sale coming to a store near you – Don’t miss this chance to…
Quick, think back to that day last year. You know the one. It comes right after Thanksgiving dinner at about midnight and begins when you step in line to get that super deal! Only 5 more hours to wait and the doors will open and you are the third in line. Sweating though, at the thought of that linebacker behind you and the damage he could if he decides he wants to be first.
Remember that day? Now think back to what you bought. Do you still have it? Does the person you gave it to still have it? What happened to it? Perhaps it was a music player that has been replaced already with the newer, better model that will hold 150 more songs…….
So why do we do it? Why do we torture ourselves so much for more crap that just fills our lives with nothing but more crap? If you think you can do it, this year you should join the ranks of those who buy nothing. Celebrate Buy Nothing Day this November 28th, and spend one more day doing the things you would love to do on your day off. It’s worth it really. That stuff will be back in the stores in quantities that won’t incite a stampede and will probably even be cheaper, or even better, you will realize that you don’t even need it. You can do it! And if you just have to go to the stores to satisfy some long tradition, do it. Go to the store, but still buy nothing. Get there at the moment they open doors and watch all those other people kill each other for a flat screen TV. That could be fun. Better yet, share your buy nothing day attitude with the people in line. Maybe you can convince one more person to buy nothing.
Take the Plunge!
As the planet starts heating up, maybe it’s time to finally go cold turkey. Take the personal challenge by locking up your debit card, your credit cards, your money clip, and see what it feels like to opt out of consumer culture completely, even if only for 24 hours. Like the millions of people who have done this fast before you, you may be rewarded with a life-changing epiphany. While you’re at it, what better time to point out real alternatives to unbridled consumption – and the climate uncertainty that it entails – by taking your BND spirit to the streets?
